August
Kevin Henkes author study
We read 3 books by Kevin Henkes: "Chrysanthemum", "Owen", and "Chester's Way." We wrote a response to each story, mapped the story elements, and compared our two favorite books.

September
The Birth of Mickey Mouse
We read about Walt Disney and how he created his first character, Mickey Mouse. We answered comprehension questions and vocabulary questions from the story.

The Fish That Goes Fishing
We read about a very creepy sea creature called the Anglerfish. We learned how fish that live deep in the sea can survive. A BrainPop video about food chains helped us understand that Anglerfish are predators because they hunt other fish. After reading our story and a book about deep sea creatures, we wrote a paragraph about Anglerfish.

The First Ice Cream Cone
We read about a fair and how the very first ice cream cone was invented.

October
The Ugly Duckling
We read about the Ugly Duckling and learned that bullying is wrong. We wrote about what it feels like to be lonely and discussed how we can be a good friend.

Sparky the Fire Dog & At the Scene of a Fire
We read about the life of Sparky the Fire Dog and how firefighters respond to emergencies during Fire Safety Week.

One Hump or Two?
We learned about camels and why some have one hump while others have two.

Columbus Day
We learned about the life of Christopher Columbus.

The Scariest Scarecrow & The Haunted Tree
Halloween/fall stories

November
The Story of Charlotte & Wilbur
We read the narrative story about Charlotte & Wilbur (from "Charlotte's Web"). We learned about how animals and people are alike.

Veterans Day
The history and importance of Veterans Day

Animal Migration, Hop Along or Fly High, & Bird Migration
Stories about migration

Bird Migration & Turkey Research
Students researched bird migration and turkeys.

December
"Magic School Bus: Amazing Magnetism"
Students will complete a novel study over the Magic School Bus book "Amazing Magnetism."

Christmas & Winter Holidays
Students learned about Christmas, giving, and other winter holidays by reading various stories.

January
"Magic School Bus: The Giant Germ"
Students completed a novel study over the Magic School Bus book "The Giant Germ."

February
Winter Olympics
Students researched the Winter Olympics. They chose an event and an athlete from the United States to track during the Olympics. They researched their event and athlete and presented their findings.

March
Iditarod
Students researched a musher in the Iditarod. They wrote a biography about their musher and created a daily log to track his or her progress.

Butterflies
Students learned about the life cycle of a butterfly as well as the differences between butterflies and moths.

April
"Magic School Bus: Twister Trouble"
Students completed a novel study over "Twister Trouble." They researched a type of wild weather, created a report and a poster, and presented their findings.

Earth Day
Students read stories about Earth Day and the layers of the earth.

May
Review of all comprehension skills
