Clowning Around

We will be taking a trip to the Circus tomorrow! So today we learned how the performers are able to balance in the air. Mrs. Yoder showed off her skills by balancing a plastic bird on the tip of her finger, the end of a pencil and even her nose! The students each had a chance to practice balancing the plastic bird before starting our experiment.

The students were then given a clown to decorate and to see if they could balance it on their fingers and noses. Our brilliant scientists quickly figured out that they needed to add weight to the hands of their clowns so they taped a penny to each hand. Then the balancing fun began!

3rd Grade is Tasty!

We have had many delicious days in 3rd grade lately. To celebrate Kansas Day, students learned about soil and were given a taste of Kansas soil in a cup. The cups had edible layers of soil: crushed chocolate chip cookies for bedrock, chocolate pudding for subsoil, and crushed Oreos for topsoil. It was the best dirt we've ever eaten!

Another one of our yummy treats was a taste of thunder cake. After reading the story "Thunder Cake" in class, Mrs. Perkins and Victoria made everyone the recipe to try. The recipe for this chocolate cake called for a can of puréed tomatoes. The kids couldn't believe that the cake didn't taste anything like tomatoes and they devoured this delicious dessert! Thank house much Victoria and Mrs. Perkins!!

In celebration of the upcoming Valentines holiday, students brought in candy bars. They worked with a partner to compare similarities and differences between their two candy bars.

We never knew 3rd grade could taste so good!
